What is Ayurveda?

Traditional Indian medicine, Ayurveda is a healthcare system over 5,000 years old and one of the most complete.

Ayurveda, meaning “the science of life” in Sanskrit (ayur = life, veda = science or knowledge), draws its knowledge from the Vedas, the sacred texts of ancient India. It represents a holistic and preventive approach to health, providing guidance and practices to maintain body and mind in harmony and optimal condition.

Recognized by the WHO as a natural, traditional, and integrative healthcare system, Ayurveda works by restoring balance in the body through lifestyle practices tailored to the individual, the use of plant-based remedies, and other natural treatments adapted to the interaction between the body, the sensory organs, the mind, and the soul. Its scope is broad, combining disease prevention, healthcare, and maintenance to support overall wellness and longevity.

The human body is made up of five elements, which form the basis of the three doshas. The theory of the three doshaslies at the heart of Ayurvedic science.

Vata, Pitta, and Kapha are the three regulatory forces that play a key role in maintaining both mental and physical balance. Each of us has these three forces in different proportions. Based on the dominant doshas, a person’s physical and mental constitution (Prakriti) can be determined.

When these three forces work in harmony, the body remains healthy. One of the main goals of Ayurveda is to maintain this ideal state, which supports vitality and strengthens the immune system.

Abhyanga is a unique form of massage rooted in Ayurvedic medicine. Ayurvedic massage provides benefits for the body, mind, and immune system. It involves the use of special oils that soften and relax the tissues (dhatus).

Abhyanga is a full-body synchronized massage that follows the movements of blood circulation. The scientific purpose of this practice is to increase blood flow, nourish the limbs, and support the heart’s function. Oil-based Ayurvedic massage is a fundamental part of the daily wellness practices recommended by Ayurveda.
